I have been thinking of changing my stock shocks to Koni Adjustable Sport shocks... I have 18" wheels and it would make my ride better.

I also thought about lowering the car, but have not decided yet. Would it make the ride much less joyable? It would look better, but will it be to hard with my 18" wheels?

Should I consider the AMG suspension with the Koni Sport Shocks. Or think some other springs? Like some adjustable springs (with you could change the amount lowered).

I would appreciate your opinions and if Eibach or Billstein are better, please tell me. I can also consider Carlsson Suspension Kit.

Hi Tollo2000,

The most community members have springs from Eibach or H&R. These are the two major distrubutors regarding lowering springs. Eibach is a bit more comfortable than the H&R. But on the other hand the H&R lowers more .

Eibach lowers about 30 mm
H&R about 40 mm.

I have H&R ( part.no. 29769-1) mounted on my car and I'm very happy with them. I had also H&R springs on my other cars before.

I don't know what springs Carlsson mount but Lorinser uses Eibach.
If you the XTC-shop there are kits with shock absorbers and springs. Werner that runs XTC will gladly help you . Contact him throughout his internet site.

Best regards
Rob

Hi Tollo,

You're absolutely right. Using 18" Rims with stock shock absorbers provides room for improvement The higher weight of the wheels reduces your driving comfort. The standard stuff doesn't controll the wheel as good as it could be done with a sporting shock absorber.

Please have a look to Werner's Shop (xtc) and look for Werners Comfort-Kit. It contains Eibach springs and Bilstein sporting shock absorbers, which are designed for shorter springs. The result should exactly meet your requirements, and all at a very nice price You'll have much more fun with your car....

Best regards and good luck,
Thomas.

hallo

I´m absolutly confirm with the replys as shown. Please note, that shocks from Koni (if not in works-conditions) for sports+racing, but that kind looses much of comfort for roadactions.

I try Eibach Springs (witch are some smoother that other products). In that case, you dont need any further (shortered) shocks, because it lowers the car about 25-30mm only, which means, your standard shocks are working well, while progress inside standard procedures.

Please note: any kind of wheels/tyres, witch have a diameter more than 17 inches, are some stiffer as standard. In use with lowered springs the affect is as twice. Thats why DC don´t offer that kind of tuning under normal conditions.

Last: in case, that you choice any kind of larger wheels and tyres, make shure, that no (!) preparations of the wingarches are needed. I little bit "smaler" is better as maximum, while - in most cases- the car mayby are loosing rostproof during handcraft works at the wings (inner-wings). Take care of that...

regards
Peter

Thank you for answering. I will consider the Einbach springs.

Yet the more important part of the suspension -> the shock absorbers. What do you recommend? Are the Koni Sport good for SLK or is some else better?

... by my self, I prefere Bilstein Sports (fixed) allways.

Some types of Koni shocks -in my road and racecars before (Alpine A110, CooperS, Renault Gordini, Lotus, Jaguar XJS, MG Supercharged, Rover Vitesse, 348 GTS....) - was given a lot of trouble with the (rubber)bushes.

Of course you know, Koni (or other productors) offers adustable shocks. That looks good, but under normal running conditions it´s very difficult, to find the correct tuning by self adjusting the valves. Drivers can make many mistakes, if the haven´t much expirience or a chance of testdrive on racetracks, by lap-time fetching.

If the shocks are to stiff (inbound or outbound or both of them), the wheels can jump under hard performance.

Thats why most of productors given fixed shockabsorbers, which are "works" tested for best fast road results. And, take a little "gift" allso: fixed shocks are cheaper..

regards Peter

Hello,

I was offered a Sachs Shock absorber + springs kit for about 750eur + 200eur for installation. This is quite good offer I presume in Finland.

Yet this kit lower the car 35mm and I am worried that this will make the car too low for local parking houses. What do you think?

Are Sachs any good?

Hello Tollo,

My SLK is lowered about 40 mm and I have no problems over speed bumps and other obsticles .

But I never park in parking houses so I can't tell you how it is.

Best regards
Rob

Hi Tollo,
I have 18"wheels on my SLK, too. Together with H&R-springs and Bilstein-shocks it gives my car a smooth (but not to comfortable) ride. Most guys here do not have Koni-shocks so I guess, there is little experience here.
Regards
Kalle
